Sydney Cooke / DIZZY

I’m originally from Merced, CA and lived in the SF & Oakland for 15 years until I moved here in 2022. I never really knew family until I was fed by my neighbors. My Various neighbor were of many ethnic backgrounds, most of whom had to flea their countries because of American Imperialism. Hmong, Vietnamese, Thai, and Mexican families treated me with a sense of safety and belonging I was not able to receive at home.I was never food insecure, but my home was not a safe place to be. I would often stay at my neighbors houses all around the neighbor and mostly got fed by other peoples moms. I finally found love in my adult life when I met someone who didn’t know me, didn’t judge me, and fed me without question. I always see this generosity in the various cultures that raised me and has given me joy and a feeling of family that was not in my home.
