“True Blue”

Phyllis Meredith

Artist Statement

I’m a multimedia artist whose work flows between film photography, alternative photographic processes, fiber art, book arts, and illustration.

I strive to create work that honors the beauty of nature and the passage of time, while also building human relationships and uplifts community voices.

Each of my paper cyanotypes are hand-illustrated with pen and ink and hand-painted. Each one is drawn on and painted by me. These illustrations give the cyanotypes a very personal touch and create visual texture, turning each print into a one-of-a-kind piece.

My cyanotype weavings and wall hangings are created from what otherwise might be discarded. Instead of recycling my imperfect prints. I rescue fragments of them that are full of unexpected textures and tones, to create hand-woven pieces and wall hangings. Turning “trash” into reimagined art. By saving and using these fragments in weavings and wall hangings, it reminds us that nothing is too small or too flawed to become art, and how creativity can breathe new life into overlooked materials.

My hand-stitched embroidery pieces begin with a cyanotype image on fabric. Their indigo hues and embroidered details call to mind the sewing circles of the past, where communal making was both ritual and refuge. These pieces remind us that art is for everyone and that art-making can be a shared, participatory, communal act.

I look forward to meeting you all at Sip 413’s June art hangout to answer questions, hang out and to further the conversation about breaking down barriers between “artist” and “observer,” in order to build community, and celebrate how creativity can and should be a shared experience.
